How to Save AI Conversations to Obsidian & Notion
If you keep a second brain in Obsidian or Notion, your AI conversations belong in it — the research, the reasoning, the drafts. The trick is getting them in cleanly. The bridge is Markdown, and once you know the workflow it's fast.
Why Markdown is the key
Obsidian is Markdown-native, and Notion imports Markdown directly. Markdown preserves the structure that matters — headings, lists, code blocks, tables, links — without the gray boxes and broken formatting you get from pasting raw web content. Export an AI chat to Markdown and it drops straight into your vault or workspace.
Into Obsidian
Export the conversation as a Markdown (.md) file and drop it into your vault folder — it
appears as a note immediately, fully formatted. A nice touch: if the export includes YAML frontmatter
(title, date, source URL), Obsidian reads it as note properties, so your AI notes are searchable and
linkable like everything else in your vault.
Into Notion
In Notion, use Import → Markdown and select your exported .md file; Notion
turns it into a page with headings, toggles, and code blocks intact. For recurring use, some people keep
an "AI Inbox" database and import into it.
The catch with copy-paste (and how to skip it)
The tempting shortcut — select all, paste — drags web styling, inline background colors, and broken table rows into your notes, and you lose code-block fencing. Exporting to a real Markdown file avoids all of that. It's also why "export to Markdown" is the single most-requested AI export workflow: what people really mean is "I want this in my knowledge base."
Keep the sources (for research chats)
If you're saving research — especially from Perplexity — make sure the export preserves citations as footnotes and a Sources list, or the note loses half its value (more on Perplexity exports).
The takeaway
Pick Markdown, export to a file (don't paste), and drop it into your vault or import it into Notion. Your AI work becomes part of your knowledge base instead of scrolling out of reach.
