How to Export Claude Conversations to PDF, Markdown & More
Claude is where a lot of serious work happens now — long research threads, Artifacts, multi-hour back-and-forth. But saving a single conversation as a clean file is harder than it should be, because Anthropic gives you a full-account export and not much else. Here are four ways to do it, honestly compared.
Looking for the direct tool? See the Claude exporter for precise-scope exports in PDF, Word, Markdown, and more.
1. Anthropic's data export (the whole account at once)
Click your initials in the bottom-left corner, open Settings → Privacy → Export data, and confirm. Anthropic processes the request and emails you a download link — which expires after 24 hours — containing every conversation on your account.
Good for a full backup or a formal data request. Not good for grabbing one conversation: it's everything at once, it's asynchronous (you wait for the email), and the result is a raw archive rather than a polished document. On Team or Enterprise plans, only the workspace's primary owner can run it.
2. Browser print to PDF
Open the conversation, use your browser menu to choose Print, and select Save as PDF.
Fine for a quick one-off. The catch: long Claude threads tend to break awkwardly across pages, code blocks get clipped at the margins, and Artifacts don't always render. It's a snapshot, not a faithful export.
3. Copy and paste
Select the conversation — or use Claude's per-message copy button — and paste it into a document.
Claude's copy button preserves Markdown well, so this works for short chats. But across a long thread you're stitching messages together by hand, and you lose timestamps and overall structure.
4. A one-click exporter (the practical route)
A browser extension reads the conversation already on the page and saves it as a formatted file — PDF, Markdown, Word, and more — in a single click, keeping code blocks, tables, math, and Artifacts intact. This is the route most people actually want: "save this one conversation, nicely, right now."
Which method should you use?
For a complete backup of everything, use Anthropic's data export. For one conversation, fast and clean, use an exporter. For a throwaway snapshot, print will do. The thing to know going in is that Claude has no native "save this conversation as a file" button — so for everyday exporting, a dedicated tool is the path of least resistance.
